Fuwa got their colors and inspiration(灵感) from the five Olympic rings. They will serve as the Official Mascots(吉祥物) of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. They will carry a message of friendship and blessings from China to children all over the world.
Designed to express the lovely features of five little children who form an intimate circle of friends, Fuwa also embody the natural characteristics of four of China’s most popular animals which are the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan(西藏的) Antelope(羚羊), the Swallow(燕子), and the Olympic Flame(火炬).
Each of Fuwa has a rhyming two-syllable name——a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China. Beibei is the Fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan is the Olympic Flame, Yingying is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini is the Swallow.
When you put their names together, they become “Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni”. It means “Welcome to Beijing” in Chinese and offers a warm invitation that reflects the mission(任务) of Fuwa as young ambassadors(大使) for the Olympic Games.
In addition, as the symbols of the five elements of nature——the sea, the forest, the fire, the earth and the sky, Fuwa also represent prosperity(繁荣), happiness, passion, health, and good luck. They will spread traditional Chinese blessings and the Chinese culture to every continent they arrive in. ......
